Punjab Govt Expands Second Phase of Free Laptop Scheme for Students

The Punjab government has officially rolled out Phase 2 of the Chief Minister’s Free Laptop Scheme, further expanding one of the province’s flagship education initiatives to improve digital access for students. Distribution under the new phase has already started in Lahore and several other districts, with authorities confirming that thousands of laptops are being handed over under a structured schedule.

Officials said that around 60,000 students will receive laptops during Phase 2. At the same time, Phase 1 distribution is ongoing, as the government continues efforts to meet its earlier commitment to provide laptops to 100,000 students in the first phase. By running both phases simultaneously, authorities hope to accelerate the overall delivery process.

The combined target of the program now stands at 160,000 laptops for students across Punjab. The scheme primarily focuses on promoting digital learning, supporting research activities, and providing students with modern tools needed for academic success in today’s technology-driven world.

Students who have not yet applied can still submit their applications through the Higher Education Department (HED) online portal, which remains active. Officials have advised applicants to ensure their information is accurate to avoid delays.

The Punjab government views the laptop scheme as a key step toward bridging the digital divide and strengthening the province’s higher education system. Authorities say the initiative is part of a broader education reform strategy designed to encourage innovation, improve academic performance, and prepare young people for future challenges.

Priority is being given to eligible and deserving students according to the announced criteria, and distribution is being carried out in line with a pre-approved timeline.

Pnjab Boards Add Hefty CCTV Charges to Inter Exam Fee

Pnjab Boards Add Hefty CCTV Charges to Inter Exam Fee

Punjab’s education boards have introduced a major revision in the CCTV camera fee for Intermediate (Inter) annual examinations 2026, triggering strong reactions from students and parents across the province.

According to the new notification, the CCTV charge has been increased from Rs30 to Rs1,030 per student and has now been included in the overall exam entry fee. The sudden rise has surprised many families who were expecting only minor adjustments in examination charges.

Earlier, during the Matric annual examinations, students were charged just Rs30 for CCTV-related expenses. The sharp jump at the Inter level has raised questions about transparency and the actual cost of surveillance arrangements at examination centres.

Parents say the additional burden comes at a time when households are already struggling with rising inflation, higher school fees, and increasing costs of books and transport. Many fear that such charges will further limit access to education for students from low-income backgrounds.

Several parents and education activists have argued that ensuring security at exam centres is the responsibility of the education boards and institutions, not students. They believe funding for CCTV systems should come from official budgets rather than individual candidates.

Parents have urged the Punjab government and concerned boards to immediately review the decision and reduce the CCTV fee, warning that continued increases in examination costs could discourage deserving students from continuing their education.

Sindh Education Department Orders Record-Keeping of Returned Textbooks

The Sindh Education Department has issued fresh instructions to schools regarding the management of free textbooks provided to students across the province, aiming to improve transparency and strengthen the system for handling government-issued learning materials.

According to the new directive, all schools must collect free textbooks from students after the completion of annual examinations. The policy applies to primary, middle, secondary, and higher secondary classes, covering both boys’ and girls’ institutions in public sector schools.

Education authorities have made it mandatory for schools to record the return of textbooks on each student’s result card. In addition, schools must maintain a separate register showing details of books issued and books returned at the end of the academic session.

All collected textbooks will be placed in school book banks, where they must be stored safely and protected from damage or loss. Officials say these book banks will help ensure that usable textbooks are available for future students, especially at the beginning of new academic years.

The directive also assigns responsibility to District Education Officers (DEOs) to compile and submit updated stock reports of textbooks in their respective districts. These reports will be forwarded to the regional education directorates for review and record-keeping.

Officials stated that the move is intended to prevent wastage, reduce losses of government-funded textbooks, and improve overall inventory management. Proper documentation, they believe, will enhance accountability at the school level and discourage misuse of educational resources.

The initiative forms part of broader education reforms in Sindh, focusing on better governance, efficient use of public funds, and improved learning facilities. Authorities expect that consistent implementation of these measures will lead to a more organized and sustainable textbook distribution system across the province.
